Minimalist watches, trend or here to stay?

The motto "Less is more" has been a guideline in the world of design and architecture since the late 1940s. And in recent years we have also seen the design of watches returning to austere and clear design with brands like Cluse and Skagen that are immensely popular.

‘Clean face watches’

Where a few years ago it was the trend to make watches as large and loud as possible, today we see a return to simplicity and modesty. No glittering stones, colors or large numbers, but instead a smaller size, quiet watch face and the entire watch in one color. Something trend watchers refer to as "Clean face watches". 

One of our bestsellers and the prime example of a clean face watch is the Dutch Brand Cluse. A simply designed watch that gets its own style through the colorful straps. Due to the neutral design, these watches match any (clothing) style. A trendy brand such as MVMT also has a very minimalist design.

The watch trend of today 

As you can tell by the collections of all trendy watch brands, the minimalist watch trend has continued. More clean face watches are also included in their collections. Often watches in which the strap and watch case have the same color, thus further enhancing the calm effect. For example the Runway Slim watches from Michael Kors. The newest watches are also often very thin and lightweight, which further reinforces their modest character.

Classic "Less is more"

The saying "Less is more" comes from Bauhaus Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and has remained a guideline for many (industrial) designers since 1947. This is of course reflected in modern editions of classic design watches such as the Mondaine railroad watches, but also with other famous designers such as Jacob Jensen. True design lovers have been finding their way to these watches for years. But the masters of minimalist design are of course the Scandinavians! From Skagen to Behring. It is as if the closer you get to the polar circle, the more minimalist the design becomes...
