A GMT watch is a watch with an extra dial or (digital) window that indicates a second time zone. This type of watch is especially popular among people who trade with countries in a different time zone, or people who regularly call family or friends in another country. This way you can see at a glance whether it is convenient to call or what time the transport department opens. GMT watches are also known as dual time watches.
The abbreviation GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. Greenwich is located on the 0 meridian, the zero point from which the globe is divided into 24 different time zones. In Amsterdam it is 1 hour later than in Greenwich, the time zone is then indicated as GMT +1.
The most common way in which a second time zone is indicated is by means of an additional independent hand that indicates the second time on a 24-hour scale. Another common GMT function is a rotating 24-hour bezel that you set to the second time zone and a hand that rotates with the normal hands to indicate the second time. And thirdly, there are also many watches that have a separate digital window for the second time zone.
