Solar powered watches

Solar watches

The battery of a solar watch is charged by (sun)light. This means you don't have to replace the battery regularly - as with an ordinary quartz watch. No need to worry about your solar watch! A watch powered by solar energy is not only practical, it is also a more sustainable choice.

What is a solar watch?

A solar watch is a special type of quartz watch that uses (sun)light to charge the battery. How exactly does this work? Small solar cells, which are incorporated in the dial, capture the sunlight and convert it into energy. This energy is stored in the rechargeable battery, which in turn moves the hands so that the watch keeps perfect time. No daylight available for a while? With many solar watches this is not a problem at all because they can also charge themselves with artificial light.

How long does a solar watch last?

With a full battery, a solar watch lasts 1 to 12 months, depending on the brand, model and functions used. If the watch has stopped completely, a few minutes of light is often enough to make it run again.
To know how much solar energy your solar watch has still stored, you can consult the battery indicator. You can see whether your watch has such an indicator on our site with the specifications of the watch, or consult your user manual.
Many modern solar watches also have handy energy-saving options. Often they will go into a standby mode if you don't use them for a while or when it's dark. Please note that a rechargeable solar battery must also be replaced at some point (about once every 10-12 years).
