Daylight Saving Time - These watches are always on time

Posted 19 October 2023 by Miriam Reading time approximately 3 minutes

Because of Daylight Saving Time, twice a year, in spring and autumn, the clock is changed at one o'clock in the morning. Of course you don't have to wait up for this, but you do have to remember to adjust your watch the next morning. Did you know that there are watches that you never have to set manually?

From now on you will never forget to set your watch to the right time! Enjoy a good hour's extra sleep on a Sunday with one of these watches:

Digital watches

Most digital watches set themselves! You only have to enter your time zone and date once and the watch always sets itself to the right time! Many brands have digital watches in the collection. But one of the best known and most loved brands is Casio, who have been setting the tone with their digital watches since the 1970s.

Exact timing: GPS watches

All GPS satellites have three or four atomic clocks on board that keep accurate time to the nanosecond. The time and the exact position of the satellite are sent along with the GPS signal. From these data and from the transit time of the signal, the exact position in three dimensions and the time on the watch are determined with four satellites. This is particularly important for athletes who use their watch or fitness tracker to accurately measure distances and time. For example, surfers use watches to keep track of their latest surf. GPS is also often used in running watches. The Seiko Astron on the other hand is a very chic and high-quality watch that also uses GPS technology.

Radio-controlled watches

Radio-controlled watches go one step further than "regular" digital watches. Radio-controlled watches contain a tiny antenna that picks up signals from an atomic clock. These highly accurate atomic clocks are located in different places in the world and emit a time signal that is used to synchronize train station clocks, traffic lights, computer networks and clocks and watches. As a result, the watch displays the correct time and date all over the world. A radio-controlled watch can have both a digital and analog watch face. A well-known brand that produces radio-controlled watches is Citizen.

Smartwatches

Smartphones also use GPS technology. By linking your smartwatch with your smartphone, the watch always shows the correct time. But that is not all you can do with your smartwatch. You receive notifications of received messages, you can keep track of your activities and much more.

Other smartwatches connect with your smartphone via Bluetooth to collect the right time and date.

Adjusting the time yourself? Do mind the crown

Pay close attention to the crown when you adjust the time on an analogue watch. Not pushing the crown back after having set the time is a common mistake. Always tread lightly when you proceed. The last thing you want is to damage the delicate mechanism of your watch. There are three steps to keep in mind: always turn the hands clockwise and only adjust the date more than three hours away from midnight. Lastly, don't forget to close or fasten the crown when you are done setting your watch to protect the water resistance of your watch.

More information about watch crowns can be found in our blog 'What is the watch crown?'.
